How does valve (mechanical) CPAP pressure regulation compare with bubble CPAP pressure regulation?
The two technologies regulate pressure differently, and each has clinical strengths. The AD-II uses mechanical valve regulation, which is more precise - airway pressure is controlled in fine increments; more stable - bubble-generator pressure fluctuates with the liquid level and fluid movement inside the bottle, so the pressure delivered through a water column wanders irregularly, while valve-regulated pressure is unaffected and stays predictable and easy to interpret; more intuitive - the pressure gauge needle shows airway pressure changes at a glance, helping nurses assess the baby's breathing; and safer - in addition to the pressure-limiting valve installed in the breathing circuit, the AD-II carries a second pressure-limiting valve inside the machine, dual protection that is difficult to implement on bubble CPAP. Bubble CPAP, in turn, is valued for its pressure oscillations: the bubbling gently taps the baby's lungs, which can improve respiratory mechanics, reduce dead-space ventilation, lower CO2 retention and help clear secretions.
